Boasting anthropomorphic dogs, ancient monuments, and a lowrider with an Aztec warrior at the wheel, cultural identity is the artwork’s driving force. Visionary painter Gilbert “Magu” Luján proudly proclaimed his Mexican and Native American heritage as he developed his colorful vocabulary for Chicano art. Turtle Island itself, a resonant reference to North America, originated in Indigenous creation stories. Luján, who founded the influential artists’ collective Los Four, celebrates the rhythm of life in this joyful utopia of Chicanismo.
